In order to obtain an NP position you must have training and experience in nursing. In fact this position is for nurses that wish to advance their careers in health care. Students may wish to begin with an Associate's Degree in nursing and then work toward their BSN, which is a Bachelor Degree in Nursing. If you are a certified RN, your path to becoming an NP will not be too difficult. It may take as long as two years of study and work, and you may need to work in a clinical environment. Once you become a certified NP the certification is good for 5 years. However, if do not have RN certification, you will have to obtain it before taking an NP program, unless you enter a special program.



An NP is sometimes referred to as an advance practice registered nurse or APRN. The NP treats patients for a variety of disorders and can give physical examinations. An NP can order and interpret diagnostics and can prescribe treatment and medications. They perform duties that are similar to physicians.



If you are a certified APRN, you may enter a specialty or practice as primary health care provider to patients. Specialties include oncology, adult care, pediatrics, and many other fields of medicine. Nurse practitioner jobs focus on treatment and prevention of disease. They also cover patient education on a variety of health concerns. Other specialties include midwife certification and anesthetist, which performs anesthesiology duties.



As an APRN, your work environment will depend on what line of medicine you choose to enter. For example, you may be interested in urgent care or perhaps work in a neonatal ward of a hospital. This kind of work is different from practicing in an office environment. Hospital work may require you to sometimes work long hours or be on call for a specified amount of time. You also may be required to work a rotating shift. If you choose to work in a doctor office environment, you might keep normal business hours.



Nurse practitioner jobs come with attractive pay and job benefits. Income varies by specialty and location. Some specialties such as dermatology or internal medicine pay more than others. Online sources report that the average income for this career ranges from $91,000 to $96,000. However, a lot of NP positions are paying upward of $100,000 for experienced people in the right specialties.



The employment outlook for nurse practitioner jobs is excellent. In fact, all areas of health care are expected to have considerable growth in the next decade. Many medical facilities do not have enough people to fill their positions and this can lead to higher pay and better benefits to attract the best prospects.
